Turkish Preparatory Program Guide

Turkish Preparatory Program

In line with its multilingualism policy, İbn Haldun University offers Turkish language education for international students. The university's School of Foreign Languages, in collaboration with the Turkish Language Teaching Application and Research Center (İHU TÖMER), aims to equip students with the necessary Turkish proficiency for academic success. The Turkish Preparatory Program consists of five modules—A1, A2, B1, B2, and C1+—designed to improve students' language skills according to their development levels. The program follows the standards set by the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR), providing a comprehensive and effective learning experience.

The Turkish teaching staff consists of experienced and qualified instructors specialized in language teaching at universities. These instructors, who have expertise in teaching Turkish as a foreign language, adopt a personalized and communicative approach to guide students efficiently in their language learning process. Our program aims to create an interactive and dynamic learning environment by engaging students through various activities.

Modular System

The Turkish Preparatory Program is offered through a Modular System, which is flexible and student-oriented. This system allows students to progress at their own pace while setting specific language proficiency goals at the end of each module. The program consists of five modules—A1, A2, B1, B2, and C1—each lasting seven weeks. Every module builds upon the previous one, ensuring that students advance their language skills progressively.

The modules are enriched with various activities and exercises to enhance students' language abilities. Through classroom interactions, group work, individual projects, presentations, and written exercises, students reinforce their language skills. Additionally, the program incorporates cultural activities to help students learn not only the academic aspects of the language but also how to use Turkish in daily life and social contexts.

Turkish Preparatory Program Modules

The A1 level, defined in the CEFR as the "beginner level," aims to equip learners with the fundamental communication skills needed for basic interaction. Students will learn essential Turkish vocabulary and sentence structures used in daily communication. This module focuses on listening, reading, writing, and speaking skills, enabling learners to meet their basic needs in simple conversations.

A2 level students, described in the CEFR as a "basic user," develop skills to handle common social situations. This level strengthens basic grammar and communication skills, allowing students to engage in conversations related to daily life, experiences, health and nutrition, nature, environment and regulations, science, art, and technology. Learners can exchange information about frequently encountered situations using simple tenses in Turkish.

B1 is considered the threshold level, where learners become "independent users" of the language. At this stage, students can express themselves comfortably, engage in in-depth communication on familiar topics, and handle various daily situations independently. The objectives of this level include:

  • Starting, maintaining, and concluding a conversation effectively
  • Expressing desires, plans, and opinions
  • Handling unexpected situations
  • Participating in conversations on familiar topics without prior preparation
  • Following the main points of extended spoken interactions
  • Producing coherent and structured arguments in written and spoken formats

This level continues the "independent user" category, where students can express themselves fluently in Turkish. At this level, learners develop skills to analyze and communicate effectively in both academic and professional contexts. They can:

  • Understand complex texts on abstract and concrete topics
  • Engage in fluid conversations with native speakers
  • Express opinions on various subjects with clarity and detail
  • Discuss current issues and evaluate different perspectives

At the C1 level, learners become "proficient users", successfully performing various linguistic and academic tasks. Students can comprehend complex structures and broad topics, using Turkish effectively in both everyday life and academic settings. This course is specifically designed to enhance academic Turkish reading and writing skills. The curriculum includes modern Turkish texts from the early 20th century to the present, such as novels, short stories, poems, essays, articles, and academic papers. Assignments involve:

  • Regular reading tasks
  • Composition and essay writing in Turkish
  • Vocabulary and grammar exercises

Information about the Program

Students enrolling in the Turkish Preparatory Program must take either the Turkish Proficiency Exam or the Placement Test to determine their appropriate level. Based on their results, students are placed in the corresponding courses and must fulfill specific requirements to pass each module. To graduate, students must successfully complete all levels and reach the required language proficiency level. Once they complete the program, they can proceed with their academic studies in their chosen departments.

In the Turkish Preparatory Program, students must adhere to the attendance criteria to ensure their success. A 90% class attendance requirement is in place, as absenteeism directly impacts overall academic performance. If a student exceeds the allowed absence limit, they will lose the right to take the final exam, be unable to advance to the next level, and will be required to repeat the course. Therefore, regular attendance and active participation in all assigned activities are essential for academic progress.

In order for students to successfully complete a module, they must score at least 60 points in the final exam at the end of the term, and their total evaluation score, calculated based on weekly assignments, projects, and exams, must be at least 65 points.
