Undergraduate Language Courses

TUR 301/302/303/304 are compulsory courses that undergraduate students who have not studied the Turkish Preparatory program at IHU must take.

TUR 301 Basic Modern Turkish I (Compulsory):

This course is a beginner level course. It aims to introduce the Turkish language to those whose native language is not Turkish. The course aims to develop four skills (reading, listening, writing and speaking). While students learn how to introduce themselves and their families, they also learn to simply communicate with their environment. At the end of the course, the aim is for the student to know basic words about himself, work, family, greetings, numbers, days, colors, and the names of the things in the immediate environment, as well as being able to make simple sentences, even if by heart.

TUR 302 Basic Modern Turkish II (Compulsory):

This course is a basic level course. It aims to present the fundamentals of communication through four skills (listening, speaking, reading and writing). In this course, it is aimed for the student to learn and use basic daily expressions in Turkish on daily life, lived experiences, health and nutrition, nature, environment and rules, science, art and technology and to achieve this level of gains in listening, reading, writing and speaking skills. With this course, students can use simple sentences in Turkish in daily life to talk about themselves, their family and friends, ask questions about other people, objects and places, give information, and exchange information about frequently encountered situations using simple tenses in Turkish.

TUR 303 Intermediate Modern Turkish I (Compulsory)

This course is an intermediate level course. This level is a level where learners can express themselves without help when using standard and clear language and can easily cope with many situations encountered in daily life. In this course, we focus on compound tenses in Turkish, situations such as obligation, condition and clause formation exercises. It is aimed for students to be able to convey a speech, learn to write and speak compound sentences, understand authentic texts by reading and listening, as well as participate in projects or discussions.

TUR 304 Intermediate Modern Turkish II (Compulsory)

In this  intermediate level Turkish program, students can understand the basic content of complex texts on concrete and abstract topics in Turkish and the discussions in their field of expertise. Students learn to cope with some complex situations (market, school, street, communication, etc.); They learn how to connect long sentences to create spoken and written paragraphs with topics that include but are not limited to description and comparison in past, present and future tenses. In this course, students build on previously acquired skills by adding length and complexity to the language and use the language in a wider range of areas.

TUR 305 Advanced Modern Turkish I (Elective)

This advanced level course aims to help students use their previously acquired Turkish language skills in a practical way. In this course, students learn to express their ideas and opinions both verbally and in writing in a planned and regular manner. They both improve their oral presentation skills with problems and discussion topics from daily life and gain familiarity with texts and authentic reading and listening materials.

TUR 306 Advanced Modern Turkish II (Elective)

​​This advanced level course aims to help students use their previously acquired Turkish language skills in a practical way. Students are introduced to different forms of artistic and cultural expression in the target language. It provides the opportunity to understand and make evaluative explanations of authentic works in fields such as stories, cinema and theater on different subjects, to understand figurative meanings through proverbs and idioms, to become familiar with culturally specific uses and to make comparisons with their own source cultures.

TUR 307 Intensive Basic Modern Turkish (Elective)

This course is an intensive Turkish language course and is planned for 10 hours per week. It starts from the elementary level and reaches the Pre-intermediate level. The course will allow students to communicate in Turkish language using simple tenses and acquire basic communicative skills – writing, reading, speaking and listening – of this level. By the end of the term, the student will be able to talk about daily life, experiences, health, nature, environment and rules, science, art and technology. At the end of the semester, the student will be able to exchange information about frequently encountered situations using simple tenses in Turkish.

TUR 308 Intensive Intermediate Modern Turkish (Elective)

This course is an intensive Turkish language course and is planned for 10 hours per week. It starts from the Pre-intermediate level and reaches the Upper-intermediate level. The topics covered in this course are related to daily life. It trains students to deal with some complex situations (market, school, street, communication, etc.). Students learn how to connect long sentences to create spoken and written paragraphs with topics that include but are not limited to description and comparison in past, present, and future tenses. In this course, students build on previously acquired skills by adding length and complexity to the language and use the language in a wider range of areas. The course is designed to help students to be independent users of Turkish. It aims that the students learn to report a speech, write and speak in complex sentences, understand when listening and reading authentic texts, practice taking part in discussions and carry out projects.

TUR 311 Advanced Readings in Modern Turkish I (Compulsory)

It is a compulsory course for international undergraduate students - regardless of IHU Multilingualism Policy. In order to take the course, it is necessary to provide Turkish language proficiency of B1 and above. The course includes different literary genres consisting of Modern Turkish texts. Reading texts cover selected topics from the fields of modern Turkish language, literature, society and culture from the early 20th century to the present; In this way, it also supports students’ research studies in History, Turkish Studies and similar fields. Assignments include regular journal readings; compositions and essays to be written in Turkish; exercises to improve vocabulary; It covers everyday and technical expressions and idioms.

TUR 312 Advanced Readings in Modern Turkish II (Compulsory)

It is a compulsory course for international undergraduate students - regardless of IHU Multilingualism Policy. In order to take the course, it is necessary to provide Turkish language proficiency of B1 and above. Reading texts cover selected topics from the fields of modern Turkish language, literature, society and culture from the early 20th century to the present; In this way, it also supports students' research studies in History, Turkish Studies and similar fields. It is the continuation of the course coded TUR 311. Assignments include regular journal readings; It includes compositions and essays to be written in Turkish, and critical articles to be written on primary texts.

Graduate Turkish Language Courses

TUR 501/502 courses are planned to meet the needs of master's and doctoral students at IHU.
